Anmol Kharel 13/3/2009 – 17/5/2016
19th July 2017
Dear Parents and Carers,
This morning we held a special assembly to celebrate the life of Anmol Kharel, a pupil at Oldfield, who sadly passed away in May last year.
Anmol was born on 13th March 2009 and started in our Nursery in September 2012. Anmol enjoyed his time in Nursery and soon made lots of friends.
Sadly on 17th May 2013 Anmol was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare type of cancer that mostly affects babies and young children. As you can imagine this was devastating news for his parents and his older brother Anuvab, who was in Year 1 at the time.
Anmol received intense treatment at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and showed great courage, even when he was in pain. During his stay at Great Ormond Street Anmol continued his learning and participated in many events organised by the hospital. On one occasion Anmol spoke via satellite directly to the astronaut Tim Peake!! Anmol asked him, “How does the connection work?” and impressed everyone by this important question! Anmol also got to meet the actor Robert Downey Jr who presented Anmol and other children with a £50 Hamley's Toy Shop voucher.
Anmol continued his treatment until he sadly passed away on 17th May 2016. In memory of Anmol, Mr and Mrs Kharel and Anuvab have started the Anmol Foundation, where money raised with go support very poor children in the world who have been diagnosed with cancer. The details of this fund are: Barclays Bank, Sort code 20-45-45, account number 43701085.
During this morning’s assembly we remembered Anmol and spoke of our decision to raise money for the research department of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. We presented Mr and Mrs Kharel and Anuvab with a wonderful framed photograph of Anmol decorated with artwork of butterflies created by the year 3 children, Anmol’s friends and classmates. They also received a copy of the Singing CD of Oldfield children and staff recorded in the Spring, as organized by Miss Savage and the Friends of Oldfield, and dedicated to Anmol.
Thank you to the School Choir who sang beautifully in the assembly this morning ‘The Time of Your Life.’ The choir are: Ria Bammi Y5O, Shafia Thulakdar, Y5O, Sonia Hare Y5O, Anarghya Zala Y5O, Kinga Blok Y5O, Gerry Comber Y4O, Layla Mentel Y4O, Victoria Szwach Y4O, Vrishin Prasad Y4O, Sarah Kotob Y4O, Grace Sheanon Y4O, Aylah Sher Y4L, Lily Leiper Y4L.
Mr and Mrs Kharel have been extremely generous in donating books for use across the school and again this morning they kindly presented Dr Day with many more books for children in our school. Every book goes out to classrooms or into our reference library with a book plate in memory of Anmol that has a picture of him so as children pick up and read these various books they can remember Anmol, his story of courage and, after today’s assembly where they met the Kharel family, the strength families can find when facing the hardest of circumstances.
