Year 4 - Mrs Tranter and Mrs Taylor(Y4O) & Miss Carter (Y4L)

Year 4 is an exciting year where children will develop academically and socially. Through the use of the new curriculum the children will be encouraged to develop their ability to become resourceful and reflect upon their learning.
 
English

The expectation for the level of written English has been raised in Year 4. Through interactive activities and written tasks children are now exploring and implementing a range of English techniques, in order to master and enhance their overall English knowledge and understanding.

Maths

This year the goal for children in Year 4 is to become masters of problem solving, reasoning and the key fundamentals of mathematics. Through the range of fun and exciting mental starters and mathematical games and activities, children are able to become more hands on with mathematics.
 
Science

Science has now become part of the curriculum where children can put on their scientific caps, in order to learn the nature, processes and methods of the subject.

BY THE END OF YEAR 4 YOUR CHILD SHOULD KNOW AND HAVE THESE SKILLS:

Reading:

  • understand what they are reading and be able to talk about the main ideas
  • recognise and understand the information in different kinds of books
  • read smoothly, like talking
  • notice when they make a mistake in their reading and be able to fix it
  • read to find out information, like answers to questions.

Writing:

  • use their writing to think about, record and communicate experiences, ideas and information
  • write for different purposes and change writing style
  • notice mistakes and correct them in their writing (spelling, grammar, punctuation)
  • publish their writing in a variety of ways including using computers, cameras, illustrations, and diagrams.

Maths:

  • work with numbers up to 1,000
  • use their knowledge of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables to solve problems
  • find fractions of sets, shapes and quantities
  • make and continue patterns and explain the rule for the pattern
  • sort objects and describe how they have been grouped (e.g., shape and size)
  • choose how you can best measure length, area, volume, capacity, weight, temperature and time
  • use simple maps to show position and direction
  • talk about events that will or will not happen
  • make up questions to investigate.
